Let me hear you say: I WILL SAVE POLAR BEARS

One day, we will wake up and realize that humanity has become the worst nightmare of nature. We have damaged, used and thrown away our planet, just with the single purpose of gaining money and power. This reality makes us question: is it worth it to gain riches at the expense of our own home? It is clear, our planet is dying. Let’s start with the fact that, all across the world, threats of global warming seem to grow stronger with every breath humanity takes. We have reached the limit of destruction; there are no longer phrases like “ global warming is just a fantasy “ or “ climate change is just a scam “. This means, we are entering the final stage of earth extinction and, if we don’t act now, there will be no water in the future and no plants for humans to feed on. But, worst of all, animals will be gone. Humanity will sure miss them all, but above all, we will feel the absence of our beloved polar bears. The future seems to be a place where humans can only admire these bears in pictures and that thought causes me to shed a tear. Let’s shed tears together for what the Earth used to be, because, if we don’t solve it now, the white-furred bears we love so much will be extinct in less than a century.

Polar bears are the most captivating cold-weather species of all, in addition to being the cutest. Kids fascinate themselves with the idea that nature holds such

a beauty. Let’s face it: humans adore polar bears. For instance, the 27th of February is the International Polar Bear day; all humanity unites to celebrate the fact that these bears are part of our world. The celebration was created 11 years ago by Polar Bear International (PBI) as a way to encourage humanity to think about the dangers many artic animals suffer in a warm environment. What a beautiful thought, right? However, in a couple of years, there will be nothing to celebrate. That is why we must start helping these furry friends by abandoning ignorance and informing ourselves about how global warming affects these animals.

Although polar bears don’t have any natural enemy, it seems to be that there is no greater predator than humans. Not only do we hunt polar bears for their fur, but also, their population has been drastically reduced due to the fact that their vital platform is at risk. Bears spent plenty of time hunting in the surface of the sea ice because they are not good enough swimmers to hunt underwater. But due to the ice platforms melting, their hunting has been reduced, leaving many of them starving to death. In other words, melting sea ice means less seals to eat and, therefore, less polar bears.

Now that we are informed about the challenges that polar bears face, let’s read what Steven Amstrup, a scientist who has been studying polar bears for over 35 years, has to say about how we, as normal citizens, can help our furry friends.

“The vast majority of energy that we derive is from fossil fuels and this process releases C02, that affects our atmosphere and increases world temperature; yet walking, riding bikes and using more mass transit instead of driving, can reduce in great amount the CO2 emissions “

Finally, for those who live in countries with 4 seasons, Steven proclaims that about half of the world CO2 output comes from heating and cooling buildings. That is why he recommends citizens to join the “Thermostat Challenge” which consists in turning thermostats down in winter and up in summer.

It is clear that global warming is a serious problem; thus we, as Pachas committed with the environment, must take action and start healing our world, so our kids will be able to meet a polar bear some day. Finally, I want to hear all of you shout: “ I WILL SAVE POLAR BEARS!”
